One of the topics of discussion at the second meeting of
the Kansas City Native American Flute Circle
was playing a loon call on a Native American flute.
Sure, there's no doubt that the ability to imitate sounds
from nature is useful on the Native American flute. So, how does one go
about playing the amazing and useful and amazingly useful loon call?
For the purpose of this description, we will divide the
holes on the flute into two blocks. This will work on both a five- or
six-hole flute. The lower block will consist of the three bottom-most
holes on the flute. The upper block will be the top three on a six-hole
flute or the top two on a five hole flute.

To make the loon call:
Step One: Cover and overblow the top two holes in the
bottom block.
Step Two: Once the overblow sound is heard, do a flutter
on all holes of the top block while simultaneously lifting the first
finger of the bottom block.
The sound you just produced approximates the call of the
loon!
